Vellore
The state government has sanctioned Rs 46 crore under the smart city project for the construction of Vellore new bus stand, official sources revealed.
Elaborating on the construction work being carried out, the officials said that the proposed new bus stand would be modelled on the lines of Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai, with multiple parking bays in different areas.
The new bus stand was initially proposed to have terminus on two levels with the upper level reserved for long distance buses and the ground level earmarked for town buses. As a first step, two soil tests were done to clear out the doubts on whether the soil would withstand the weight of the superstructure and the vehicles, as the site was located on the banks of the Palar river.
The first test was done by a private company, who vetoed the idea of multi-level parking and a second opinion was sought from the technical team of Anna University in Chennai, who reiterated the same. Based on both the reports, it was decided that the terminus would be constructed only on one level, an official said.
The state government has sanctioned funds as a second instalment under the Vellore smart city project. Earlier, a sum of Rs 33 crore was allotted to beautify the historic Vellore fort which included provision of various modern amenities including a sound and light show, modern toilets, reception centre and sign boards at important locations. Under the scheme, the first work was to spruce up the moat which was silted on one side and currently, works are being carried out to remove all the weeds growing in the moat using the four metal floats hired by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
