COIMBATORE: Heavy rains continued to lash Coonoor and its surrounding areas in the Nilgiris district, leading to the collapse of trees and mudslides in multiple locations, disrupting traffic on the ghat road.
The region has been receiving persistent rains over the past few days. On Monday night, heavy rains triggered a mudslide and the rolling down of boulders, obstructing the Coonoor-Mettupalayam ghat road.
Traffic was restored after clearance work was carried out by deploying an earth mover, even as rains continued throughout the night.
In the Darlington Bridge area near Coonoor, a huge tree got uprooted and crashed onto the road, damaging cars and two-wheelers parked nearby. The falling of the tree also damaged the building of a public toilet.
Soon, the fire and rescue service personnel, along with officials from the electricity board, rushed to the spot and removed the fallen tree. Fortunately, any major tragedy was averted as there were none inside the vehicles at the time of the incident.
Expressing concern over the frequent falling of trees, the public has urged the authorities to identify and remove weak trees along the ghat road to prevent further similar incidents.
