Two brothers, who violated a peace bond executed with the Coimbatore city police, were on Wednesday ordered by the City Deputy Commissioner to be jailed for 365 days. As the duo was already held in connection with an attempted murder incident a few days ago, they have been asked to continue serving their days in jail for the remaining period of their recent one-year term.

According to the police, S Suresh (23) and his twin brother S Ramesh from Housing Unit-North in Selvapuram were facing charges of theft and assault in at least 16 cases in various police stations across the district.

The police then executed a bond with the duo on August 17 with the assurance that they would not indulge in any unlawful activities for one year. However, on August 18, that is a day after the execution of the peace bond, Suresh and Ramesh reportedly attempted to murder a man by stabbing him with a knife in Selvapuram over a quarrel.

Upon receiving a complaint, the Selvapuram police registered a case and arrested the duo. The brothers were subsequently produced before Coimbatore City Deputy Commissioner Balaji Saravanan on Wednesday for an inquiry, when they confessed to have violated the peace bond executed with the police.

Following this, Deputy Police Commissioner Balaji Saravanan issued an order awarding 365 days of jail term to Suresh and Ramesh. As they both had already served days in jail from the day of arrest on August 18 to August 27, the duo was ordered to serve the remainingdays behind bars.

Though the judiciary is not directly involved in the process, offenders will have to go to jail if they break the bond as the police can invoke provisions under Sections 107, 109 and 110 of the criminal procedure code (CrPC).

The police can execute a peace bond with those found to act in conflict with law for up to three years.

“Even if they write a bond, their previous cases will not be scrapped and will be tried separately in a court. Also, they should honour the bond as a pre-condition. If they breach the bond, then they could be sent to jail,” said Deputy CommissionerBalaji Saravanan.
