CHENNAI: A group of cadres from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) confronted their party’s Mettur constituency candidate, K Selvam, in Kolathur near Salem, leading to a heated argument on Wednesday.
The confrontation took place when Selvam visited Kolathur to meet party functionaries and mobilise support. A section of party workers gathered outside the Kolathur Panchayat Union office and staged a protest, questioning his decision to vacate the local party office.
The cadres also accused Selvam of irregularities in the advance booking of tickets for the yet-to-be-released Vijay starrer film Jananayagan, alleging that tickets initially priced at Rs 200 were later sold at significantly higher rates.
The situation escalated into a tense verbal exchange for some time, creating a brief commotion in the area. Selvam, who appeared upset, later left the spot. A cross-section of party members further expressed dissatisfaction with Selvam’s candidature, stating that they were unhappy with his selection for the Mettur constituency and demanded his replacement to improve the party’s electoral prospects.
Rejecting the allegations, Selvam termed the charges as baseless and blamed rival political elements for instigating the protest. “When the film itself has not been released, claims of ticket overpricing are unfounded,” he said.
He also said that he continued his outreach efforts by meeting party functionaries in the area before leaving the locality.
