To promote language, cops choose Tamil for primary communication

The Tamil Nadu Director General of Police JK Tripathy on Monday, has issued a circular instructing all police personnel to use the Tamil language for all communication purposes including registers, signboards and vehicles. The initiative by the head of the State police has attracted appreciation from Opposition leader MK Stalin.

The circular dated November 20 stated that after a review meeting conducted by the Tamil Development Department, it was decided that the police personnel in the State should use Tamil as a primary option to communicate within the department as an effort to promote the language. The circular applies to ministerial staff as well as police officials.


“All departments are following the order. We are also doing it. It is mandatory for all IPS officers, from other States as well, to learn Tamil before they become Superintendent of Police in the State,” noted Tripathy, when DT Next contacted him.


J K Tripathy, in the circular, had asked all personnel to use Tamil in roll call registers, forward files, other registers, all the drafts and notes circulated withinthe department.


The circular further added, “The police personnel will have to sign in Tamil in registers and attendance books. Messages and files circulated should be written in Tamil. The seals and stamps should also be printed in Tamil. Moreover, all the vehicles must bear the sticker ‘Kaval’ (Police) in Tamil.


The name boards of the senior police officers should also be in Tamil,” readthe circular.


The reviewmeeting conducted by the Tamil Development Department happened between November 7 to 9 and the circular came out as a result of the interaction between the two departments.
