TNPCB to start remediation of chromium-contaminated site in Ranipet
The interim work involves capping of existing and new hazardous waste stockpiles, construction of a stormwater drainage network, a rainwater collection pond, and a new boundary wall with a cut-off trench.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has initiated interim remediation measures in a site in Ranipet where chromium contamination is affecting the residents. The action is based on an order issued by the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
As per a TNPCB document, Tamil Nadu Chromates and Chemicals Limited (TCCL) is an identified chromium-contaminated site at Ranipet. During its operational period 1975 to 1995, chromium-bearing process waste of 2.27 lakh tonnes was dumped in the open backyard in an area of about 2 hectares. The leachate generation is causing chrome contamination of land and groundwater in that area.
The interim work involves capping of existing and new hazardous waste stockpiles, construction of a stormwater drainage network, a rainwater collection pond, and a new boundary wall with a cut-off trench.
Since the TNPCB has completed the preparation of the DPR, the agency has invited contractors to carry out the capping process as per the DPR.
Taking up a suo motu case in 2020, the NGT has issued an order to the state government, TNPCB and other government agencies, in September 2022, directing the government to complete the process of preparation of DPR within 6 months from the date of judgement and start remediation work within a further 6 months from the finalisation of DPR.
The Tribunal also permitted the TNPCB to carry out capping as an interim measure and implement both short-term and long-term remediation measures. However, works are delayed by several months, following which the NGT is seeking a compliance report from the Board.
“TNPCB has decided to implement the interim remedial measure of capping the site as suggested in the DPR submitted by ERM India
Pvt Ltd to stop further contamination since current and previous management is not traceable,” the TNPCB said in a document. Moreover, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), as per the judgement, should conduct a study after the completion of the remediation process as to whether the remediation process is complete and the issue is resolved permanently.
