CHENNAI: Schools in Tamil Nadu are set to reopen from classes 1 to 12 for the new academic year 2025-26 today (June 2). The students of state-run schools will be distributed uniforms and books on the reopening day.

With the summer holidays having started on April 25, the Department of School Education announced that the schools will reopen on June 2.

Though there were expectations that the reopening date would be revised due to a temperature rise, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, assured that the peak summer has passed and schools can be reopened on the scheduled date. However, RMC had predicted summer weather till June 3.

On school needs for the students, a department official said, "The required uniforms and textbooks were sent to the respective districts a week earlier and have reached the schools by now. The other items, the kit for the students, will be distributed in the coming months."

Additionally, with the school reopening, the education department has released a set of guidelines to all school management.

Through the notification, the department has detailed the activities to be carried out before the schools open and the educational, co-curricular and non-academic activities to be followed this year.

Meanwhile, Minister of School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has also urged respective district education officials to check if there is proper transportation, especially in rural regions, for students to arrive at school on time.

The minister also urged the officials to ensure that free uniforms and textbooks are distributed to the students across the state on the school reopening day.

Admissions for the 2025-26 academic year commenced on March 1 across the state, however, the department has requested all school management to ensure admissions continue, especially full enrolment in class 1.
