The Doctors’ Association for Social Equality (DASE), on Monday, held a meet to put forth their demands to the Centre, which included bringing in an ordinance exempting students from the state from having to write the Common Entrance Test.

The Association also demanded that 2,600 extra seats be given to medical colleges in the state. “Though the state government tried to get an exemption this year, we demand that a permanent exemption be granted to the state. We also urge the Centre to make an amendment allowing only students of Tamil Nadu to be able to occupy state seats,” said Dr G R Ravindranath, general secretary of the Association.

Underprivileged students should be given 50 per cent reservation and the Medical Council of India should change its rules to accommodate the same, the Association demanded.

Charging that 50 per cent of private college seats be given to state government students, he also said that efforts should be made to ensure that the government fund the education of students whose family income is less the Rs 12 lakh a year.

“The education loan should not have interest and should be given immediately. Also, private medical colleges should not be allowed to conduct direct admissions,” the doctor stated.
