The government’s move assumes significance as it will help thousands of students, especially from the rural areas and from economically-weaker sections, who cannot travel long distance to get free training in the only free government coaching centre in Chennai.
At present, the All India Civil Services Coaching Centre (AICSCC) in the city, which is functioning under the Tamil Nadu government, provides free coaching to young graduates in the state to enable them to prepare well for the UPSC-Civil Services Preliminary Examinations every year. The next examination will be conducted in May 2020.
Accordingly, the training centre admits 225 aspirants for full-time residential programme and 100 part-time candidates. The coaching centre gives free accommodation and food for the students besides giving stipend to them. Training will be conducted in AICSS for the period of six months.
A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that many civil service aspirants in far-flung rural areas could not come to Chennai training centre due to various reasons.
“Following the representation from several students and parents, the government has decided to upload all the training sessions on the website so that the candidates, who have registered for the civil service exam, will be benefited,” he added.
He claimed that of the total 325 candidates, who were given free training every year, about 90 per cent of the students clear preliminary exams, which was conducted by the UPSC across the country.
“Once the live training sessions are uploaded more students, who can access internet from their home, can be benefited,” he said, adding that training sessions would be conducted on all the week days between 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm, which is expected to be convenient even for students, who are engaged in part-time jobs.
The official said in addition to the class lessons, model personality sessions will also be uploaded, which will be useful for students at the time of interview after completing the main civil service paper. “Model personality classes are given to the candidates by senior IAS/IPS/IRS officers and subject experts,” he said.
“More than 10,000 aspirants, who have taken coaching from AICSCC in Chennai, have entered into various services and are spread throughout the country,” he claimed.
