TN: Govt school teacher on census work loses gold chain to snatcher

CHENNAI: A 49-year-old government school teacher was robbed of her gold chain by a man near Vandalur on Saturday evening. The victim, Selvi, is a resident of Mannivakkam near Vandalur and works as a government school teacher in Oonamancheri.

On Saturday, she was deputed for census work. After completing the work, she took a bus to Vandalur bus stop at around 5.30 pm and started walking towards Mannivakkam along the GST Road when the incident happened, said the police.

As Selvi was walking on the foot overbridge near Vandalur railway station, the suspect who walked behind her, pushed her down and snatched the seven-sovereign gold chain from her neck and fled the scene.

Hearing the woman's cries, public and police personnel rushed to her aid. A part of the gold chain which had fallen on the foot over bridge during the snatching was secured and handed over to the teacher.

The police have registered a case and have begun examining CCTV footage in the neighbourhood to ascertain the identity of the suspect.
