

Madurai: Nine vehicles equipped with surveillance cameras were introduced in Thoothukudi on Monday. The facility has come into effect with a collaboration of the Thoothukudi police and SPIC.
South Zone Inspector General of Police, Prem Anand Sinha, flagged off the vehicles in the presence of Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John.
Eight vehicles meant for the Armed Reserve police and a Highway patrol vehicle have been equipped with this facility.
These vehicles would be used to carry out surveillance during prisoner escort duty, court and security-related matters.
The cameras have internal memory with night vision recording capability.
It is a crime prevention initiative, said Assistant Superintendent of Police C Madhan.
