COIMBATORE: While jallikattu dominates Pongal celebrations in Southern Tamil Nadu, the Kongu region comes alive with the spectacle of traditional rekla races at this time, every year.

Over the years, the rekla races have gradually transformed from a rugged, traditional sport into a more structured and disciplined event, attracting wider participation from across Tamil Nadu.

“Rekla racing has evolved. In recent times, only a single pair of bulls charges down the track at a time, and their speed is meticulously recorded by a timer fixed on the cart’s axle. Racing bulls one pair at a time with a timer helps prevent disputes over deciding the winners,” said S Jaya Prakash, an organiser of rekla racing.

In earlier years, rekla races were held over long distances as part of temple festivals and other traditional celebrations. “Over time, safety measures have been enhanced, including barricading the tracks to protect spectators. Additionally, the race distances for the bulls have been shortened to 300 and 200 metres, depending on the age of the bulls, to ensure their well-being. From registration for the participants, the entire process of conducting the race has now been automated," he added.

After a period of slowdown, the traditional Rekla races witnessed a revival following the Jallikattu protests in Chennai. Nowadays, the races attract participants from all walks of life, with caste, creed or religion playing no role. Nevertheless, the growing value of prizes has become a key draw, encouraging more participants to take part in the races. If not for the Rekla races, many of our native breeds would have faced extinction. The population of Kangeyam bulls has definitely increased,” said H Krishnan, a bull racer.

With at least two races scheduled each month, this season has a lineup of nearly 20 races, stretching over more than six months, keeping the centuries-old tradition alive and thriving in Tamil Nadu's cultural landscape.
