CHENNAI: With the written examinations for the recruitment of more than 2,700 assistant professors in government arts and science colleges concluded, shortlisted successful candidates will be called for interviews shortly, with the recruitment process likely to be completed by the end of February.

Following instructions from the Higher Education Department, the Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board issued a notification in October 2025 to fill 2,708 assistant professor posts.

The decision to appoint 2,708 permanent assistant professors comes in the backdrop of the establishment of 37 new government arts and science colleges over the past four years and 16 more in 2025.

Registration began in November, and the examinations were conducted on December 27 after scrutiny of applications submitted by teaching aspirants.

A senior official from the Directorate of Collegiate Education said around 42,000 candidates appeared for the examination, with an overall attendance of around 90 per cent.

The official said the TRB has released the tentative answer keys along with an objection tracker. Candidates have been asked to submit objections related to the OMR evaluation on or before January 13, the official added.

Stating that candidates are likely to be shortlisted later this month, the official said interview dates and venues would be announced shortly. He added that the recruitment process was progressing as scheduled and that a more transparent system is in place for the appointment of assistant professors. The recruitment process is expected to be completed by the end of February.

The official noted that the TRB had ensured that candidates were allowed to apply for only one subject for the assistant professor post and were permitted to appear for the examination accordingly.

Applications submitted for more than one subject by the same candidate were rejected, a move that has reduced verification hurdles during the recruitment process, the official noted.

He added that after receiving appointment orders, the selected candidates would undergo a faculty development programme before taking up teaching assignments.
