CHENNAI: Condemning the Tamil Nadu government for withholding Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) promotions and non-payment of salary arrears, professors and members of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) TN are set to resume their state-wide protest on Tuesday.

The protest in Chennai will largely be held at government-aided colleges by aided college professors.

Speaking to DT Next, a member of AUT said, “In early January, Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan told us that policy decisions will be taken after necessary consultation with the CM and other department officials. However, so far we have not received any confirmation.”

Therefore, AUT and other associations are continuing both separate and joint protests demanding non-payment of salary arrears to professors working in government-aided colleges. The professors highlighted that the rightful grant of CAS promotions has been held for several years. Though multiple requests were made, there had been no outcomes of these interviews by the varsity.

It is noteworthy that last year in November, staff of University of Madras, and members of the TN Federation of University Faculty Associations (TANFUFA) had demanded for an immediate implementation of CAS promotions. Additionally, Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association had also placed a similar demand.

The staff of universities also claimed that the fundamental right to career progression was being denied, as provided under the UGC and State government norms.
