Vellore
The hearing which took place at the Vellore Government Medical College auditorium in the presence of CRA (Commissioner Revenue Administration) K Satyagopal, Collector A Shanmugasundaram and DRO J Parthiban saw residents from Kaniyambadi panchayat union, 12km from Vellore on the Tiruvannamalai road, demanding that they continue to remain with Vellore district. “When Vellore was just 20 minutes travel away why should we be attached to the proposed Tirupattur district, which is 85km away?” they asked.
Similarly, residents from Agaram firka in Madanur panchayat union, requested that 15 village panchayats in their area be removed from Ambur Assembly segment and be attached to Anaicut PU as the latter was a short distance away whereas commuting to Ambur would consume more than an hour.
But the most vociferous demand was for Gudiyattam and Pernambut taluks to be retained with Vellore due to shorter distance. Pernambut Consumer Welfare and Protection Sangam founder president T Basheeruddin suggested that Jolarpet and Alangayam in Vellore district be converted to revenue taluks and be attached to Tirupattur district while the same could be done with Ranipet and Sholingur which could be added to the proposed Ranipet district.
He also suggested that Gudiyattam, Ambur and Arakkonam be made into new revenue divisions as a district should have a minimum of two such divisions. He also demanded that the existing vacant posts in the newly-created Pernambut taluk be filled to ensure that public did not suffer on this account.
When the media asked Satyagopal whether the trifurcation would be based on revenue taluks or Assembly constituencies, he said this would be decided only later as the present meeting was only to elicit public opinion.
