CHENNAI: A day after the deadline for filing claims and objections under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ended, the Election Commission of India extended it till January 30
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik said on Monday that the commission reviewed all aspects of the revision process and decided to grant an extension to ensure that no eligible voter was left out.
With the extension, voters can submit applications for inclusion of names, seek corrections, or raise objections in the electoral rolls until January 30, said the CEO, who also urged all eligible voters to make use of the extended period and submit the prescribed forms. Voters can file claims and objections through the commission's website.
Between December 19 and January 18, during which claims and objections could be submitted, 13.58 lakh forms were submitted for name inclusion in the voter list.
Due to the SIR exercise, around 97.37 lakh names out of 6.41 crore electors were deleted, reducing the electorate in Tamil Nadu to 5.43 crore. Election Commission data showed that 44,651 forms were submitted by electors seeking deletion of their names.
