Official sources said people living on the banks of River Vaigai that traverses through Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts were advised to move to safer places, as the Vaigai dam was reaching towards its full capacity of 71 feet.
The inflow was 1,961 cusecs and the discharge was 2,190 cusecs. The final flood warning will be issued once the dam level touches 69 feet after which the entire inflow into the dam will be discharged.
Meanwhile, the water level in Mullaperiyar Reservoir stood at 128.20 feet this morning as against its permissible level of 136 feet. The inflow into the reservoir was 1,173 cusecs and the discharge was 1,650 cusecs, thesources said.
Heavy rain predicted for 2 daysin districts
After a break of three days, heavy rain is likely to make a comeback in various districts, including Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga, said the Regional Meteorological Center.
Meanwhile, a few districts, including Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Sivaganga received moderate rainfall on Friday. The highest amount of rainfall of about 8 cm was received in Ramanathapuram, while Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli received at least 3 cm of rainfall till 08.30 am on Monday.
As per the regional meteorological center, isolated parts of the Tamil Nadu are expected to receive heavy showers in the next 48 hours followed by thunderstorm and lightning.
The meteorological center also issued a warning to fisherman of strong northeasterly winds with a speed of 40-60 kmph over Comorin area and the Gulf of Mannar.
