CHENNAI: With the rains in the catchment areas of Siruvani Dam increasing, the Coimbatore corporation administration has heaved a sigh of relief. It is to be noted that Siruvani Dam is the lifeline of Coimbatore Corporation supplying drinking water to the city.

Officials of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) stated that as the water level increases in catchment areas, the drinking water supply to Coimbatore corporation would be under control.

A senior official of the Coimbatore Corporation while speaking to IANS said, “We were worried as the water level in Siruvani Dam had touched rock bottom as monsoon in Kerala was weak. But now there are copious rains and this has led to an increase in water level in Siruvani Dam.”

The water department officials also said that water level in Siruvani Dam has now touched 22 ft which is almost half of the water capacity of the dam that stands at 50 ft.

It may be noted that 20 wards of Coimbatore city depend on water from Siruvani Dam and water was provided only once in 15 to 20 days. With the rains increasing in the catchment areas, the Coimbatore corporation officials and TWAD officials are expecting more water in the Siruvani Dam in a couple of days.

The corporation officials are expecting the water in the dam to last for two more months and with rains on the increase, the water supply to the Corporation would be regular.
