CHENNAI: Ordering newly appointed police personnel to handle cases involving women and children with sensitivity and care, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday said their responsibilities begin the moment they receive their appointment orders.

Addressing the new recruits, he said people are able to move freely in society because they feel secure due to the police. He noted that Tamil Nadu has emerged as an investor friendly State because of its strong law and order situation, and stressed that the new personnel must uphold public confidence so that investors continue to feel secure.

Referring to media reports on police personnel, the Chief Minister said any news, whether positive or negative, about an individual policeman reflects on the entire force. He urged officers to conduct themselves with dignity and responsibility at all times.

Emphasising humane policing, he said the police should not adopt harsh methods while dealing with the public. Officers were instructed to handle grievances politely, maintain a respectful approach and interact with people with a smile. He also stressed the need for extra care and sensitivity in cases involving women and children.

Highlighting welfare schemes for police personnel, the Chief Minister said the government remained committed to improving their working conditions and overall well being. He also underlined the importance of physical fitness, stating that police personnel must not only maintain law and order but also take responsibility for their own fitness.

Reiterating the need to curb drug abuse, he appealed to officers to adopt a zero tolerance approach towards the sale and distribution of drugs and take strict action to thwart the menace.

The Chief Minister issued appointment orders to 621 sub inspectors selected through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Commission. Ministers Ma. Subramanian and P.K. Sekarbabu, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, Home Secretary Dheeraj Kumar and Director General of Police G. Venkataraman were present.
