Namakkal youth tames 19 bulls in RT Malai jallikattu

TIRUCHY: Namakkal tamer and a Srirangam bull were adjudged as the best at the RT Malai annual jallikattu event held in Karur on Saturday, while as many as 41 persons were injured during the event.

Among the injured, seven persons who sustained severe injuries have been referred to Tiruchy Government Hospital, while Namakkal tamer and a Srirangam bull were given cars as first prizes.

The annual jallikattu event at RT Malai near Thogamalai in Karur was flagged off by the Karur MLA V Senthilbalaji, in which as many as 750 bulls from Karur, Salem, Pudukkottai, Tiruchy and Madurai and 385 tamers from Karur and adjacent districts participated. The event started at around 8.30 am, and the bull owned by the Veerachileshwarar temple was released to mark the start of the event.

Subsequently, the bulls were released from Vadivasal one by one while the tamers, divided into groups as per the norms, tamed the bulls, which had undergone medical assessment before the event. Among the tamers who were given several prizes, KPM Karthik from Namakkal was adjudged as the best tamer for taming as many as 19 bulls, while Srirangam Bull Periya Karuppu, owned by Lakshmi Narayanan, was adjudged as the best bull. They both were given cars as prizes in the name of Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin.

Collector M Thangavel, SP K Josh Thangiah and others were present during the event.
