ELCB is a simple device that detects even a small earth leakage in one’s premises, automatically tripping and disconnecting the electricity supply to the premises/equipment, thus preventing serious mishaps. It also detects faulty and inter-mixing of internal wiring preventing potential wastage of electricity.

Though the Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to safety and electric supply) Regulations, 2010 has made consumer having sanctioned load equal to or more than 5 kilowatt (kW) has to install ELCB at his premises, the Tangedco wants the consumers with a connected load of over 2 kW to install the device as a safety measure.

The chief engineer of the Tangedco’s commercial wing has written to all the chief engineers of the distribution regions to effect electricity service connections to every electrical installation other than the voltage not exceeding 250 volt, below two kW with the installation of the ELCB. “In the distribution review meeting held on September 18, the director (Distribution) has instructed all the chief engineers of the distribution regions not to effect new electricity service connections without earth leakage protective device installed by the applicants in their premises,” the letter dated September 18 said.

A senior Tangedco official said that installation of an ELCB would help avoid shocks and mishaps. “It is during the monsoon season when several incidents of people getting electrocuted due to power leakage happens in the state. This device would be particularly useful during the monsoon season to help automatically disconnect the supply after detecting leakage,” the official said. He said that the cost of the device would be starting fromRs 2500.
