CHENNAI: A month after a senior woman manager was found charred to death in the fire incident at the LIC building on West Veli Street in Madurai, police on Tuesday said that she had been burnt alive by her co-worker.
56-year-old A Kalyani Nambi was doused with petrol and set ablaze by administrative manager D Ram over a tussle on settling death claims. She had warned him about sending a report to their higher-ups, stating that he was unnecessarily delaying death claims, police said.
The accused, who had sustained burns in the fire, is in police custody.
The deadly fire had broken out in the air-conditioned hall on the second floor of the LIC building around 8.30 pm on December 17 last year, while office work was in progress. Kalyani Nambi's charred body was found near her cabin while D Ram had sustained nearly 30 per cent burns.
Fire and rescue personnel had rushed to the building, which is located opposite the Madurai Railway Junction, brought the blaze under control, and recovered the charred body of the senior manager from the premises. Ram had been rescued and rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, before being referred to a private hospital for further treatment.
