CHENNAI: Madurai airport will be upgraded to improve both domestic and international services, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu informed the Lok Sabha.
During the Question Hour, Virudhunagar MP Manickam Thakur raised the question regarding the development of Madurai Airport, said a Maalaimalar report.
Responding to the query, the minister said Madurai was one of the most important airports in Tamil Nadu and added that the number of flights operating from there, including international services, has already been increased. Steps have also been taken considering the demand to operate the airport round the clock.
Minister Naidu said the request to grant international airport status to Madurai was under serious consideration.
The demand to increase the number of flights to Chennai and Bengaluru would be discussed with the airlines and implemented based on their operational capacity, he said.
Emphasising the importance of the airport, the minister said Madurai plays a key role in both domestic and international air traffic and assured that efforts would continue to improve its facilities.
