Various arts and cultural events have also been organised as part of the festival. A large number of people gathered at the temple to participate in the event.
District Collector A Annadurai inaugurated the two-day festival organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the Thanjavur Palace Devasthanam.
While addressing the event, Annadurai glorified the king for rendering the Big Temple to the world. His name and fame would ever remain in the world, he said.
He also said that King Raja Raja Chola was a versatile personality and had astonished the entire world with the construction of the Big Temple. He commenced the construction in 1004 soon after the crowning and completed the works in 1010. “His prompt planning and architectural mind had proved himself after the construction of the Big Temple,” theCollector stressed.
The events on the first day were commenced with traditional music by TKS Padhmanaban. Seminars on various topics and cultural programmes were also organised as part of the festival.
The second day programmes on garlanding the statue of King Raja Raja Chola would be held on Wednesday. Senior Prince Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, political leaders and functionaries of various Tamil outfits would participate in the event. A light and sound programme on the King Raja Raja Chola has been scheduled.
