After undergoing a leg surgery in November last year, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan had kept himself away from the heat of politics baring a press conference over CAA at his party office in Alwarpet on December 17. He also visited the protesting Madras University students on the issue.

However, he subsequently announced the boycott of the rural local body polls stating his party’s goal is to come to power in 2021 state polls. He then inaugurated the party’s third headquarters in Tiruchy on January 10. After the Tiruchy event, Kamal has been maintaining a stoic silence even as his cine industry colleague Rajinikanth’s remarks snowballed into a major controversy.

Rajinikanth subsequently refused to apologise even as the BJP and pro-Hindu groups rallied in support of the actor while criticising Periyar on the social media. Even as the ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition party DMK spoke in one voice on the issue against the attempt to tarnish the image of Periyar, Kamal, who subscribes to Dravidian ideology, did not utter a single word even after the vandalisation of a statue of Periyar in Chengelpet.

The grapevine is that it’s the desire to join hands with Rajinikanth for the ensuing state assembly polls next year that is behind Kamal’s silence.
