CHENNAI: BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday welcomed the city Mahila Court's life sentence awarded to Gnanasekaran, the accused in the Anna University sexual assault case, while urging the ruling DMK government to pursue justice in several other pending sexual crimes across the State.

In a statement, Nainar Nagenthran said, "The historic verdict, sentencing Gnanasekaran to rigorous life imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years, is the result of relentless efforts by many political parties, including the BJP. We welcome the court's decision with utmost respect."

However, Nainar Nagenthran raised concerns over whom he called a still-unnamed accomplice in the case.

"Who is the mysterious 'sir' who is said to have been indirectly involved? There is growing suspicion that the trial may have been hastened to shield influential figures within the DMK," he alleged.

"The released photographs show that the convicted Gnanasekaran—merely a street vendor—enjoyed proximity to top officials, even ministers. It is inconceivable that he could have accessed the university premises without political backing," he said.

Nainar Nagenthran further accused the DMK of inaction in multiple sexual assault cases over the past four years, citing incidents in Arakkonam, Ayanavaram, Cuddalore, and Anna Nagar.

"Why is there a delay in filing FIRs in certain cases? The Chief Minister, who speaks of social justice, owes the people answers," he said, demanding comprehensive investigations and accountability.
