CHENNAI: Avadi City Police's Central Crime Branch (CCB) has registered a case and begun investigations into allegations of Rs 2.85 crore misappropriation of funds at the Madhavaram campus of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS).
The irregularity came to light in August last year during an internal audit, and the findings were submitted to the University's Registrar. Subsequently, an internal inquiry was initiated, and it was found that funds were systematically diverted from multiple university-linked bank accounts from 2021 to 2025.
According to police sources, R Vadivel, who joined TANUVAS as a temporary accounts officer in 2019 and later served in the Veterinary Incubation Foundation, had allegedly siphoned off money by transferring funds to his personal bank account and bank accounts of his associates.
Further scrutiny revealed the involvement of another staffer, Rajni, who was subsequently suspended from service. Police have estimated the total amount misappropriated at approximately Rs 2.85 crore.
Investigations are under way to find the roles of others involved in the diversion of public funds, police said.
