“The Information Technology (IT) Department proposes to have a Hackathon for a solution to this (borewell deaths). The government is looking forward for a working prototype equipment for rescuing children from borewells and tunnels,” said an official from the IT Department.
After the death of Sujith, who was trapped in a borewell for four days and died inside the borewell, there was outcry across the state demanding the government to come up with solutions to rescue children trapped in borewells.
PMK leader Ramadoss, in one of his tweets, said, “It is sad that despite several dedicated efforts we have lost Sujith. Such incidents should not be repeated in future. New technologies and equipment to rescue children from borewells should be invented.”
He also demanded the borewell owners to close all the abandoned borewells. The government with the help of local bodies should find out the abandoned borewells and take steps to close them.
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan criticised the government for not coming up with a solution to end borewell deaths. “It is a matter of national shame that our state did not have any technology to rescue a two-year-old child who wastrapped in a borewell for several hours,” said Thirumavalavan, in a statement, who also demanded the government to find outtechnological solutions forthe problem.
The state government has taken the issue on a serious note and is preparing for the Hackathon event. “The device can be similar to bronchoscope where a pipe once it reaches the child can put out tentacles around the child and pick him or her up,” said the IT Department official.
