COIMBATORE: A 45-year-old farmer from Krishnagiri died of rabies on Thursday after he was bitten by a stray dog.
The deceased, Ekambaram, was bitten on his left leg by a stray dog three months ago. “After receiving a single dose of vaccine for rabies at the Government Primary Health Centre in Bellarampalli, he discontinued the recommended follow-up dose of vaccinations,” said an official.
Despite developing various health complications, the farmer continued to ignore treatment. On January 27, Ekambaram developed severe fever and persistent vomiting and was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru, where he was found exhibiting symptoms of rabies.
Subsequently, the farmer was admitted to Krishnagiri Government Medical College Hospital, where he passed away on Thursday early morning. As a precaution, the health department staff administered a rabies vaccine to his family members, as well as the medical staff who attended to him in the hospital.
