COIMBATORE: Egg prices peaked at an all-time high of Rs 6.40 in the poultry hub of Namakkal on Monday. The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) on Monday fixed the procurement price of eggs at Rs 6.40 paise, up by five paise from Rs 6.35 paise on Sunday in the Namakkal Zone.
Egg prices have continued to show an upward trend since last month. On November 16, the egg prices reached Rs 6 per piece, the highest ever recorded price in the poultry sector in Namakkal.
The steep rise in farm gate price of eggs is likely to further push up the retail prices of eggs, which are now sold above Rs 7. Egg prices are on the rise due to a drop in production despite an increase in demand ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Meanwhile, the poultry farmers said there was no change in chicken prices as broiler chicken is sold at Rs 120 per kg and layer chicken at Rs 95 per kg.
