TIRUCHY: A DMK councillor walked out of the Tiruchy City Corporation council meeting on Friday, alleging that no funds had been allotted for developmental works in his ward and accusing the Mayor of his own party of neglecting basic infrastructure needs.

The council meeting, chaired by Mayor Mu Anbalagan in the presence of Commissioner Madhubalan, reviewed civic works planned for 2025–26.

The mayor said Rs 32.50 crore had been earmarked for drainage works under the fast-track mode, of which works worth Rs 9.07 crore were underway, while tenders had been floated for the remaining Rs 23.43 crore. He also said road works covering 177.8 km had been completed at a cost of Rs 77 crore.

During the debate, DMK councillor Ramadas claimed that no developmental work had been carried out in his ward and said residents had repeatedly complained about the lack of facilities. “I am answerable to the people who elected me,” he said before staging a walkout.

Responding to the charge, the Mayor said the councillor had placed incorrect facts before the council and maintained that developmental works worth Rs 33 crore had already been taken up in Ramadas’ ward.

Meanwhile, another DMK councillor, Kajamalai Viji, alleged that officials were not informing him about area sabha meetings and urged the council to strictly follow protocol to help representatives address local issues. The Mayor directed officials to verify whether councillors were being informed and assured that timely communication would be ensured.
