CHENNAI: Amid continuous protests demanding the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the Group of Ministers (GoM), including Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, will hold a consultative meeting with government staff and teachers’ associations on December 22.
In a statement issued on Friday, the government said that Minister for Public Works E.V. Velu, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, and Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh are part of the Group of Ministers that will hold talks with around 44 associations, including JACTTO-GEO, at the Secretariat.
Staff associations have been protesting against the abolition of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and demanding the revival of the Old Pension Scheme.
Following the protests by government staff and teachers, a Pension Committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi was constituted to study the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), and the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), and to recommend the most suitable option for the State.
After detailed discussions with various staff associations, the high-level committee submitted its interim report to the Chief Minister on October 1, 2025. The committee sought additional time to finalise and submit its final report.
Meanwhile, the Group of Ministers will hold further discussions with staff and teachers’ associations. Based on the outcome of these discussions, the government will decide whether to revive the Old Pension Scheme.
