CHENNAI: Former Union Minister and MP A Raja has approached the Madras High Court challenging the dismissal of his plea seeking key documents in a disproportionate assets case registered by the CBI.
The case pertains to allegations that Raja amassed assets worth about Rs 5.53 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income during the check period between 1999 and 2010. The CBI registered an FIR for disproportionate assets against him, his wife MA Parameshwari, and others in 2015.
The matter is currently pending trial before the Special Court for cases involving elected representatives in Chennai.
Raja had earlier filed a petition before the trial court seeking the production of certain documents, including a representation dated August 22, 2015. However, the trial court dismissed his plea on December 8, 2025, prompting him to file a criminal original petition before the High Court.
In his petition, Raja contended that the documents sought are essential for effectively defending himself at the stage of framing of charges.
The petition also highlights that similar allegations were previously examined during the 2G spectrum case investigations by multiple agencies, including the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, and Income Tax Department, and certain transactions were not found incriminating.
Raja has argued that the inclusion of such transactions in the present case is unjustified and politically motivated. He has sought to set aside the trial court’s order and direct the CBI to furnish the requested documents to ensure a fair trial.
When the matter came up for hearing, Justice AD Jagadish Chandira directed the CBI to file a response to the plea and adjourned the case.
