CHENNAI: The state unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) celebrated its centenary year valedictory in the city, recalling its foundational history and contributions to India’s socio-political struggles.
In an event held at the party’s state headquarters in T Nagar, presided over by CPI state secretary Veerapandian, the party also showered praises on veteran Communist leader R Nallakannu, who turned 101.
In his address, Veerapandian said the party had completed a century dedicated to workers’ rights, social equality and the fight against exploitation. Recalling Communist pioneers in the South, such as Amir Haider Khan and KTK Thangamani, he said the movement must continue to confront corporate-backed ruling forces. He also congratulated senior leader R Nallakannu on his 101st birthday and the Tamil Nadu government’s honour recognising him as a distinguished Tamil.
CPI national committee member GR Ravindranath praised Nallakannu as a scientific Marxist and a steadfast organiser who upheld collective leadership. He said Nallakannu lived for a future built on equality without caste or class divisions, and called for political, organisational and ideological renewal to advance the struggle for socialism.
State executive member M Selvaraj highlighted the role of Amir Haider Khan in laying the structural foundation of the Communist movement in Tamil Nadu. He noted that, through the Workers’ League and the publication Munnertram, the leader mobilised industrial workers and students during the early 1930s despite his imprisonment and the restrictions imposed by the British.
Earlier, Veerapandian welcomed senior leaders and cadre who marched in a rally led by the People’s Red Volunteers from the statue of Perunthalaivar Mappillai Alagirisamy. Senior leader R Mutharasan hoisted the centenary flag, while veteran leader G Palanisami received the ceremonial torch.
As part of the celebrations, 80 veteran Communist leaders aged 75 and above from Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts were honoured.
