COIMBATORE: A 19-year-old girl studying in college was stabbed to death by a youth in Pollachi near Coimbatore on Monday.
The victim, Ashwika, from Ponmuthu Nagar in Vadugapalayam near Pollachi, was studying second-year BSc Information Technology in a private college in Coimbatore. Police said she was in love with R Praveen Kumar, a staff of a private finance firm from Annamalayar Nagar in Pollachi-Udumalpet Road.
As she avoided talking to him over some issue over the last few days, an irked Praveen Kumar visited her house, while she was alone and broke into an argument. He then took out a knife and stabbed her face and neck, before fleeing away.
The critically injured girl collapsed on the spot with profuse bleeding. The neighbours rushed her to Pollachi Government Hospital; however, she died on the way.
Even as a search was on, the accused surrendered at the Pollachi West Police station. He was then taken into custody by the Pollachi Taluk police. An inquiry revealed that they both fell in love when Praveen Kumar was residing with his family in her neighbouring house.
“Ashwika’s parents, who came to know of their love, raised an objection, and Praveen Kumar moved to Annamalayar Nagar with his family, but continued their relationship. Meanwhile, Ashwika posted a photo of her with another boy on social media. When he questioned her, she avoided talking to him over the last few days, resulting in her murder.
