CM Vijay’s urban mission to focus on infrastructure, quality of life

CHENNAI: The State government has announced the creation of the Chief Minister's Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) to improve the quality of life of people by strengthening urban infrastructure and civic services.

Under the scheme, project reports will be prepared for corporations, municipalities and town panchayats to improve safe drinking water supply, underground sewerage systems, solid waste management, roads and transport facilities. Measures to improve the environment and public health will also be included. The CMIUDM scheme will be implemented with an estimated allocation of Rs 25 crore.

On behalf of Chief Minister Vijay, Minister Rajmohan announced the new schemes during the demands for grants on the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

Meanwhile, Rs 254 crore has been allocated for the ongoing underground sewerage works in Tambaram, Chromepet and Thiruneermalai, as well as for new underground sewerage projects.

The legacy waste accumulated over several years in Avadi, Tambaram and Coimbatore Corporations will be removed using the biomining method.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is currently operating 22 sewage treatment plants. The biogas generated from these plants will be upgraded into Compressed Biogas and commercialised. This is expected to generate additional revenue for the government.
