CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday paid rich tributes to late film producer AVM Saravanan, marking the 1st month after the legendary producer's death on December 4, 2025, describing him as a towering figure who not only safeguarded the legacy of the iconic AVM Studios but also played a quiet yet influential role in shaping Tamil cinema and public life.
Speaking after unveiling Saravanan's portrait at a commemorative event held at Virugambakkam here, Stalin said it was impossible to speak of the history of Tamil cinema without acknowledging the contribution of AVM, founded by AV Meiyappa Chettiar and later nurtured with dedication by Saravanan. He recalled how several stalwarts of cinema and culture had often spoken about Saravanan's steadfast commitment to preserving the institution built by his father.
Stalin traced Saravanan's early association with the Dravidian movement, noting that, as a student, he won a speech competition by reciting dialogues from Parasakthi, a National Pictures production in collaboration with AVM Productions.
CM Stalin also recalled the close relationship between the AVM family and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, citing multiple instances, from the release of Saravanan's magazine Hello Madras to Karunanidhi's personal involvement in resolving a major labour strike at AVM Studios.
Sharing personal memories, Stalin said he often met Saravanan during morning walks on Marina Beach when he was the Mayor of Chennai. "He would regularly offer thoughtful suggestions on how the city could be developed," the Chief Minister said. He also recalled Saravanan's keen interest in civic initiatives, including public awareness campaigns on waste segregation and cleanliness.
Reflecting on Saravanan's ability to embrace change, Stalin said the producer believed that society and art must evolve with time. "He bound people together not through authority, but through affection," Stalin said, adding that Saravanan's legacy would continue to live on in the hearts of the people.
The event was attended by Minister Ma Subramanian, actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, lyricist Vairamuthu and others.
