CHENNAI: BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran on Tuesday flayed the ruling DMK, condemning what he described as political indecency and a steady erosion of law and order in the State, and warned that the party's conduct would ultimately lead to its downfall.
Reacting to controversial remarks made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a DMK event in Erode district, Nainar said the comments by DMK traders wing secretary Kasi Muthu Manickam were vulgar, objectionable and wholly unacceptable.
"It is strongly condemnable that a leader holding a party post was spoken about in a degrading manner on a public platform. The fact that those on the dais and in the audience applauded and laughed exposes the brutal mindset prevailing within the DMK, " he said in a statement.
He alleged that the DMK had repeatedly crossed the boundaries of political decorum, ranging from using abusive language against the Prime Minister to issuing threats. "This pattern of conduct can no longer be tolerated. The DMK functionary concerned must immediately tender a public apology for insulting the Prime Minister, " he said, adding that a party that indulges in personal vilification driven by political animosity will not survive for long.
Turning to the law and order situation, the BJP leader said the people of Tamil Nadu were yearning for elections amid what he termed a complete breakdown of public safety. He cited the recovery of the body of a migrant youth with cut injuries, found stuffed in a sack near Adyar in Chennai, as a shocking example.
"That such a murder could be committed without fear in the State capital and the body dumped in a busy area in broad daylight raises serious questions about public safety, " he said.
Nagenthran claimed violent crimes had become routine, with murders, sexual assaults, robberies and drug-related offences dominating daily news. "If this continues, living in Tamil Nadu itself will become unbearable, " he said.
Accusing the DMK government of reducing the police into an instrument of political control and allowing narcotics and criminal networks to flourish, Nainar said people believed peace would return only with the ouster of the present regime. "The end of a government that has failed to protect its people is not far away, " he added.
