CHENNAI: With gaming and animation gaining popularity in job markets across the globe, engineering colleges affiliated with the state-owned Anna University, for the first time, are likely to introduce exclusive courses in these ‘specialisation subjects’.

At present, these courses are available only in deemed universities while at Anna University, animation finds its place as a “small” elective subject in a few courses. A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that animation was a highly competitive field requiring creative and tech-savvy professionals.

“Likewise, gaming technology is also a preferred course among students all over the world. However, here in our country, especially in Tamil Nadu, both animation and gaming courses were offered only in deemed universities, which charge an annual fee of around Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh, that puts it beyond the reach of students from poor background,” he said.

Stating that the demand for both animation and gaming courses was high, he said: “Soon, perhaps from next academic year, there is a possibility of introducing these courses in the engineering colleges affiliated with Anna University.”

The courses would be B Tech (Computer Science & Engineering with specialisation in Gaming Technology) and B Tech (CSE with specialisation in Animation), he said: “A detailed curriculum would be prepared by the experts in this regard.” The official said that students who pursue B Sc Computer Science might also get a chance to study gaming and animation for their bachelor’s degree.

“The Higher Education Department is expected to thoroughly assess through the opinion of the academicians, experts and students before coming to a conclusion to prepare the syllabus for both animation and gaming”.

The official said approval would also be sought from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start the two courses. “The authorities here would send a detailed report to the AICTE in this regard,” he added.
