The insect museum, which will be first of its kind in the country, has been set up in an area of 6,691 sq. feet at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
The new facility will showcase insects collected since the early 1900s as preserved specimens. It also has live specimens in different developmental stages of insects, their images, videos and models on their unique behaviour, habits and habitats.
“Displays have been made on themes such as insect diversity, insect biology, beneficial insects, insect and plants and cultural entomology. There will also be curated specimens along with information charts,” said a senior faculty of TNAU.
A related video will be projected through screens with the theme related insect diorama placed in the centre of each section. Also, the museum houses a butterfly dome with live plants in a rockery type fountain.
Three touch screen facilities with information on insect trivia, insect records and ‘insects and you’ will also be present. In an added attraction, two insectoscope units have been set up at the gallery. A souvenir shop and a mini auditorium to screen insect movies and documentary films are part of the museum.
A section on social insect exhibiting termite mounds (whole and sectioned) and bee hives of different kinds and forms is developed at the rear side of the museum. “This facility is likely to enthuse and motivate the public, students, research scholars, agricultural officials and farmers about insects,” said the faculty.
The museum, funded by the state government, has been provided with an electronic ticketing facility and a ramp for the convenience of physically challenged persons.
