With the introduction of ‘ghee halwa’, it adds yet another variety to dairy by-products made by this unit. Apart from palcova, mysurpa and milk cake being prepared, consumers had a chance to pick and choose ‘halwa’ made purely with ‘Aavin ghee’ and with a combination of wheat and sugar as ingredients, according to K. Sri Renganathan Durai, General Manager, Aavin, Tirunelveli.
The ‘ghee halwa’ is available in quantity of 250 grams at Rs 60 in Aavin parlours at Tirunelveli. Over the last three days till Deepavali, one tonne of ‘ghee halwa’ was sold through its parlours and marketing agencies in Tirunelveli city alone, the General Manager told DT Next on Monday. In just a span of two hours, 40 kg of Aavin halwa was sold out from its parlour at Tirunelveli new bus stand. On a daily average, about 120 to 150 kg of halwa is being prepared at an exclusive production block in this unit.
Since Tirunelveli was known for its ‘halwa’, a sweet delicacy, a local expert in preparing halwa was hired. Based on a suggestion by C. Kamaraj, Managing Director of Aavin, the ‘ghee halwa’ was made and introduced in the market. During the last month, the managing director inspected the unit and made this suggestion.
“The demand for ‘Aavin halwa’ from consumers was huge, but since the production unit has only one master, we could hardly cater to demands,” the general manager said.
Considering all the demands, he opined that production would touch three tonnes a month in coming days.
To bring real taste, the most sought-after delicacy was prepared in stove with cashew nut shell as fuel. However, he maintained that quality rather than quantity should be the priority.
