8 get life for 2015 murder of Karcheri panchayat chief

MADURAI: The VI additional sessions court in Madurai on Monday convicted eight persons, including a woman, for murdering the president of Karcheri panchayat in Madurai district and sentenced them to undergo life imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Karuppasamy (58), the panchayat president was murdered by an armed gang on February 27, 2015, over enmity. It is said that there was a running enmity between the victim Karuppasamy and M Muniyasamy (63) of Sakkimangalam village, who was former panchayat president, after his encroached building was evicted as per the HC order.
Karuppasamy also had a dispute with S Thamil Selvam, another resident of Sakkimangalam, over some other issue. Angered by the eviction, a gang of 12 men, including Muniyasami and Thamil Selvam, hacked Karuppasamy to death. Sessions Judge S Kirubakaran Mathuram found eight persons guilty of the murder and pronounced the sentence.
The convicts are S Thamil Selvam (48) of Sakkimangalam, P Soundarapandi alias Soundar (30), T Birabu Deva (28), M Elavarasan (33), K Kaviarasan (34), G Ajith (32), Vennila (43) wife of Thamil Selvam and M Muniyasamy (63). However, the court acquitted three men, including Arul Manikandan, Balamurugan and Rajangam.
