TIRUCHY: Thanjavur police on Saturday arrested five persons from a Hindu outfit for attempting to protest against a cultural event organised by a left-wing group.
Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam organised a cultural conference in support of Keezhadi excavation and in opposition to Vedic culture. The Hindu Munnani members attempted to stop the event and even announced a protest by showing a black flag against the event. The outfit also lodged a complaint with the Thanjavur West police demanding to ban the conference. However, the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam proceeded with the cultural event as per the schedule.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the police arrested Gunasekaran, Karthi Rao, Santhosh Kumar, Gubendran and Divakar of right-wing groups as precautionary measures.
In the meantime, Hindu outfits, Thanjavur BJP, Hindu Makkal Katchi and other pro-Hindu outfits opposed the arrest and condemned the police for acting in the interest of Christian missionaries.
