Following complaints and reports, the School Education Department had formed a committee in each district to collect the data on surplus teachers at State-run schools.
Accordingly, as many as 32 districts were taken into consideration and data from about 4,000 government and government aided high schools in the State were collected.
A senior official from Education Department said that the data of surplus teachers were also taken subject wise. As per the data given by the official, a total of 1,706 surplus teachers were identified at various high schools. “The data was taken as per the Pupil-Teacher ratio, which is at present 35:1,” he added.
Speaking on subject-wise breakup, the official said as many as 457 surplus teachers in Science subject were identified followed by 308 surplus teachers in Tamil subject. Stating that there was a shortfall of 144 teachers for English subject, the official said that orders have been issued through district educational officers to all the high schools to immediately submit their respective vacancy list.
The official said that Villupuram has 170 surplus teachers, which is the highest among other districts. “All the identified surplus teachers will be immediately posted to other nearby school as per the available vacancy,” he said.
Pointing out that all the surplus teachers would be posted to other schools well before the board exams, the official said, “The committee will also be asked to conduct a survey on surplus teachers in middle schools so that they will be transferred to other school before next academic session.”
He said that the orders were also given to all the school management to send surplus teachers’ list at the end of every academic year.
