Tamil Nadu: Over 1 lakh travel to native places in special buses for Pongal

As of midnight on January 9, 2026, all 2,092 scheduled buses were operated in full, in addition to 614 special buses deployed to manage the festive rush. In total, 2,706 buses were operated.

CHENNAI: About 1.21 lakh passengers travelled to their native places ahead of the Pongal festival as the State Express Transport Corporation operated special buses to facilitate public travel, its Managing Director R Mohan said.

As of midnight on January 9, all 2,092 scheduled buses were operated in full, in addition to 614 special buses deployed to manage the festive rush. In total, 2,706 buses were operated.

So far, 1.16 lakh passengers have booked tickets in advance for travel from Chennai.

“During the Pongal travel period, additional buses will continue to be operated based on public demand,” he added. Passengers have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and make prior reservations to avoid last-minute congestion during the festival season.
