A farmer, who came under knife for the first time for a bowel surgery at a hospital here, has recovered so fast that even people of younger age would envy him.
A native of Palakkad in Kerala, Kittuchami was admitted to Liver and Gastro Care Hospital on January 16 with complaints of severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
“Our CT scan revealed that his intestine was obstructed due to narrow internal hernia ring. Also, one third of his intestine was in the scrotum,” said Dr S Vijayakumar, who performed the surgery.
It was decided to go ahead with the surgery as Kittuchami did not suffer from any co-morbid factors like diabetes, hypertension and asthma. His family members, who were initially reluctant for the surgery, considering his age factor, too gave their nod.
“After the one-and-a-half-hour-long surgery, Kittuchami made remarkable recovery within 24 hours and became mobile in 48 hours. He was on normal diet and was discharged from the hospital on the fifth day after the operation,” added Dr Vijayakumar.
Further, he said, “at a time when it is even difficult to live up to 100 years, it is indeed a miracle for the 104-year-old man to survive and recover so fast after the surgery. This has become possible only because of his healthy lifestyle and clean habits as he is a non-smoker and does not consume alcohol. ”
Kittuchami, who underwent a surgery for the first time in all these years, said, “I am now on a normal diet. Until a year ago, I used to commence work in my farm early during sunrise itself. Now, I can’t do any hard labour, but continue to oversee the farm.”
