Sanjay collected 12 raid points to propel Evans to a 26-11 victory over Velammal School in the City final. Sanjai Murugavel was the best defender of the summit clash, securing three tackle points. It was Evans which demonstrated its skill and strength on the mat to notch up an easy win.
“It’s a proud moment for me to see my team win the KBD Juniors. The kids worked hard for this and it is a much-deserved result,” said Satish, coach of victor Evans. The winning chief feels more youngsters are driven towards kabaddi because of the invitational event (KBD).
“As part of sports quota, we pick talent from across the state. We make them stay in our hostels and go through regular routines. After the start of KBD, a lot of youth have taken to the contact sport. As we prepare for this event and the Nationals, we usually hire mats. Our School management gets it done for us,” added the coach.
Prior to the City final, Evans had proved its mettle against Kavi Bharathi Vidyalaya in the last four stage, with Velammal getting the better of Kannagi Nagar Govt School in the other clash. Tamil Thalaivas cover defender Ponparthiban Subramanian was in attendance to catch a glimpse of the next generation kabaddi players.
“By looking at the professional manner in which kids are playing the sport, I feel there is a bright future for kabaddi. It was a great experience to be part of this venture,” stated the Tamil Nadu lad. In all, eight schools took part in the league phase.
