CHENNAI: After days of high-decibel campaigning by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), and the Congress, the voting began in 119 constituencies in Telangana on Saturday.

The ruling BRS is seeking a third term of governance on the basis of the party's performance and promises over the past 10 years. The Congress is talking of support in its favour to form its first government in the state and the BJP is also promising to end "misrule and corruption" of the Bharat Rasthra Samithi.

All preparations for voting in the districts have been completed.

A total of 3.17 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect legislators for a 119-member Assembly.

A total of 2,290 candidates from 109 parties including the national and regional parties are in the fray.

"I call upon my sisters and brothers of Telangana to vote in record numbers and strengthen the festival of democracy. I particularly urge young and first-time voters to exercise their franchise," he tweeted.

"People should come out of their homes and vote. Hyderabad is known for not voting very well. So, we need to increase the voting percentage. Today is the day to strengthen our democracy," says BRS leader K Kavitha.

After casting his vote in Hyderabad, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi says "I urge the people of Telangana to exercise their right to vote to strengthen democracy....It is very important that those living in urban areas vote, not think of this day as a holiday. If you vote, the accountability of the politicians will also increase. First-time voters have a great responsibility to fulfil."

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said the people of Telangana have decided that they will choose a transparent and people-friendly government that has a safety net for the disadvantaged.

Telangana records 20.64% voter turnout till 11am

Telangana Assembly elections: Voter turnout recorded over 20%

Telangana recorded a voter turnout of 20.64 per cent till 11 am in the assembly polls that is currently underway for 119 seats, according to the Election Commission of India.

It is seen as a political stunt by the Telangana government. I will be writing a letter to the Union government expressing my concerns on this issue. It is essential that we address this matter through proper channels rather than resorting to extreme measures..."
