It may be recalled that a bloody clash broke out between PMK men and VCK workers in Marakkanam during a meeting of the PMK. Two members belonging to the Selvaraj of Ariyalur and Vivek of Thanjavur were killed in the fight.

When the case came up for hearing before the additional district sessions judge Selvamuthukumari on Wednesday, six VCK men, Manikandan, Raghu, Senthilkumar, Parinathan, Raji and Sekar, were convicted in the murder of Selvaraj. However, the trial in the murder case of the other victim Vivek is yet to commence.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convicts.

PMK founder Ramadoss welcoming the judgment said that his party’s position has been vindicated as several persons were blaming the PMK for the 2013 violence. He said the violence was planned by the VCK and other rival parties. Now it was proven that the PMK was not responsible for the clash. “The murder case of Vivek is still pending before the court and we expect a similar judgment in that too,” he said.

He also demanded Rs 50 lakh each as compensation for the family of the murdered cadre since no relief has been distributed to the affected families so far.
