CHENNAI: A young man and his girlfriend died after they were hit by an EMU near Perungalathur on Tuesday night. They were in love and were about to get married with parents’ permission said the police, who believe that it may not have been a suicide.

Police identified the deceased as Vikram (21) and Aadi Lakshmi (22) from Cuddalore. Both had completed college together and were reportedly in a relationship. Last year, they came to Chennai in search of jobs and have been staying in separate hostels in Perungalathur.

Recently Vikram was placed in a company in Chennai while Aadi Lakshmi got a job in a matrimony firm. They used to return to their hostels from work on the same EMU, said the police.

On Tuesday night, they reached Perungalathur railway station and were walking near the rail tracks when an EMU that was approaching Perungalathur from Vandalur knocked them down, killing them on the spot.

A team from Tambaram railway police retrieved their bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination to the Chromepet GH. Police said the loco pilot blew the horn continuously but the couple failed to hear the loud horn and did not notice the approaching train.

According to the police, both families had accepted their relationship and discussions were going on about getting them married. Hence, this may not have been suicide, added officials. The Tambaram railway police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
